A study of identity, culture, and connection, bound by a single precious thread.

COLLECTION 2026

ZA’FARAN

  • This project explores the contrasts between cultures across regions where saffron has long been part of daily life. Although these countries differ in language, history, and traditions, a single thread connects them: saffron, an ingredient used in cuisine, rituals, and shared gatherings. Each portrait represents a face that could belong to these landscapes and is titled using geographic coordinates, linking the individual to a place within this wider cultural map.

Drawn in charcoal, the portraits emphasize raw human expression, while subtle touches of saffron pigment introduce the colour of the spice itself. Through this contrast between monochrome and saffron, the project reflects on how diverse cultures can remain deeply different, yet still connected through shared traditions.

Expressive charcoal portraits inspired by cultures across saffron-growing regions, exploring how diverse societies are connected through a single shared thread.
